Fourteen Major Stars & Classic Formations — Born Hour
Ziwei Dou Shu organizes human destiny through fourteen major stars arranged in planetary alliances. Classic archetypes like Sha-Po-Lang, Ji-Yue-Tong-Liang, and Zi-Fu-Lian-Wu-Xiang reveal vocational genius and temperament.
The North & South Dipper Stars
The fourteen major stars are divided into the North Dipper (Ziwei, Tianji, Taiyang, Wuqu, Tiantong, Lianzhen) and South Dipper (Tianfu, Taiyin, Tanlang, Jumen, Tianxiang, Tianliang, Qisha, Pojun).
Every star carries its own elemental nature and role in the imperial court metaphor: Ziwei is the Emperor, Tianfu the Treasury, Tianliang the Incorruptible Judge, Qisha the Field Marshall.
Zi Wei, the Emperor star, Earth element, yang. Sits sovereign over a palace; 12 palaces read nobility, official rank and authority. Lu: rise; Quan: dominance; Ke: fame; Ji: lonely grandeur. Solemn and dignified, leading, dignity-driven, but risks isolation when unloved.
Tian Ji, the Mutable star, Wood, yin. Plans, schemes, pivot. Strong in siblings, children, friends. Lu: plans succeed; Quan: takeover; Ke: refinement; Ji: overwork and shortened life. Clever, restless, analytic, prone to indecision.
Tai Yang, the Sun, Fire, yang. Radiance, paternal warmth. Best in career palace; if fallen, hard labor. Lu: rank; Quan: command; Ke: renown; Ji: harm and toil (men especially). Warm, leaderly, but exhausting perfectionism.
Tian Tong, the Unity star, Water, yang. Blessing, humility. Strong in virtue, children, property palaces. Lu: fortune; Quan: ease; Ke: mildness; Ji: laziness and weakness. Gentle, generous, but aimless and slow.
Lian Zhen, the Second Peach Blossom, Fire, yin. Passion, discipline, second romance. Strong in career palace. Lu: dual success; Quan: dignity; Ke: nobility; Ji: official harm. Frank, intense, but invites trouble.
Tian Fu, the Treasury star, Earth, yang. Stored wealth, stability. Best in wealth, property, career palaces. Lu: gain; Quan: command; Ke: noble; Ji: emptiness and loss. Prudent, reliable, but conservative.
Tai Yin, the Moon, Water, yin. Inner wealth, maternal grace. Best in wealth, property, children palaces. Lu: gain; Quan: hold wealth; Ke: noble; Ji: empty (especially for women). Subtle, perceptive, sympathetic.
Tan Lang, the Greedy Wolf, Wood, yang. Desire, sociability, talent. Lu: wealth; Quan: command; Ke: refinement; Ji: romance trouble. Adaptable, multi-talented, but scattered and greedy.
Ju Men, the Dark Gate, Water, yin. Words, debate, hidden truth. Strong in siblings and friends palaces. Lu: eloquence; Quan: authority; Ke: fame; Ji: lawsuits and rumors. Sharp-tongued, insightful, but quarrelsome.
Tian Xiang, the Seal star, Water, yang. Support, dress, food. Lu: clothing; Quan: dignity; Ke: noble; Ji: want. Diplomatic, supportive, but dependent and indecisive.
Tian Liang, the Elder star, Earth, yang. Elder protection, dispels disaster. Strong in parents and life palaces. Lu: shelter; Quan: authority; Ke: fame; Ji: toil or injury. Mature, protected, but over-anxious.
Po Jun, the Destroyer, Water, yang. Destruction and renewal. Strong in life and property palaces. Lu: renewal; Quan: command; Ke: cleverness; Ji: ruin and loss. Bold, innovative, but volatile.
The Three Great Archetypal Formations
When major stars align across the Destiny (Ming), Wealth (Cai), and Career (Guan) palaces, they form permanent structural archetypes (San Fang Si Zheng):
Qisha, Pojun, Tanlang — bold disruptors, entrepreneurs, venture leaders, and catalysts of dramatic change.
Tianji, Taiyin, Tiantong, Tianliang — civil administrators, analysts, counsellors, scholars, and methodical stewards.
Brightness & Planetary Dignity
A star’s effectiveness depends on its positional brightness (Miao, Wang, Li, Xian). An exalted Emperor (Ziwei Miao) commands respect; a fallen star in Xian needs auxiliary stars (Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang, Wen Qu) for redemption.
