Five Elements in Detail — Born Hour
Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water are relationship language in Four Pillars culture: generating, restraining, month command, and balance — not medical, personality, or investment verdicts.
What the Five Elements are
Classical culture groups phenomena into Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. In Four Pillars practice, they mainly describe how stems and branches support or restrain one another.
Always ask who generates whom, who restrains whom, and what is in season — before talking about “strength.” Saying “you are Wood” without month command flattens a map into a verdict.
Growth, extension, orderly reach. Stems Jia/Yi; branches Yin/Mao; Yi also hides in Chen.
Ascent, illumination, diffusion. Stems Bing/Ding; branches Si/Wu; Ding also hides in Wei.
Bearing, transforming, centering. Stems Wu/Ji; branches Chen/Xu/Chou/Wei.
Descent, flow, storage. Stems Ren/Gui; branches Hai/Zi; Gui also hides in Chou.
Generating: support and flow
Generating means support: Wood→Fire→Earth→Metal→Water→Wood. In charts, a weak element often looks to Resource (what generates it) and Friends (same kind); a strong element may also “leak” through continuous generating.
Restraining: tension and regulation
Restraining means regulation: Wood→Earth→Water→Fire→Metal→Wood. Restraint is tension, not doom — excessive restraint harms; measured restraint sets limits.
Among the Ten Gods, Officers often map to what restrains the Day Master; Wealth often maps to what the Day Master restrains.
Month command, hidden stems, Day Master
The Month Branch is often treated as seasonal command: what is in season shapes Day Master strength readings most. Seasonal strength is structural bias, not moral luck.
Classical twelve stages (Birth through Nourish) sketch a Day Master’s energy curve across branches — a teaching map, not a lifespan metaphor.
Each branch hides one to three stems (main, middle, residual qi), refining Ten God and element weights.
The Day stem is the reference. Other stems and branches are read as Friends, Output, Wealth, Officer, and Resource. Born Hour’s balances and Yong Shen candidates are rule maps — not fashion or medical advice.
Spring: Wood strong in classical teaching mnemonics.
Summer: Fire strong.
Seasonal turns: Earth strong.
Winter: Water strong.
From Five Elements to Ten Gods
Ten Gods personify element relations relative to the Day Master. For names and limits, see the Ten Gods topic.
In chart compare, A→B / B→A bonds use the same Ten God math — stem relation only.
How to read it on your chart
Start with Day Master vs month command, then drought or excess, then Ten God spread, then balancing candidates.
Any “favor / avoid” language is cultural reference only: structure, never prediction, and never a substitute for professional advice.
