Eight Classic BaZi Patterns & Formations — Born Hour
In Zi Ping methodology, a birth chart is classified into distinct Patterns (Ge Ju) governed primarily by the Month Commander. Patterns provide the structural blueprint of vocational talents, temperament, and life dynamics.
How Patterns Are Formed
According to classic treatises like the Zi Ping Zhen Quan, patterns are predominantly determined by the hidden stems of the Month Branch. If a hidden stem pierces through to the Heaven Stems, it establishes the official pattern.
A pattern can be pure (Qing) or mixed (Zhuo), intact (Cheng Ge) or broken (Po Ge). A broken pattern that finds salvation through counter-agents is termed "broken yet rescued" (Po Er Fu Cheng).
Dynamic synergy between Wealth stars and Officer stars, channeling enterprise into institutional authority.
Eating God or Hurting Officer feeding Wealth stars — intellect, craftsmanship, enterprise, and artistic innovation.
Seven Killings tamed by Resource or disciplined by Eating God — turning crisis into decisive breakthrough power.
The Eight Classic Regular Patterns
Traditional Zi Ping recognizes eight normal patterns (Zheng Ge) originating from the Ten Gods:
Bold, ambitious, commanding; requires restraint or transformation to harness fierce energy productively.
Honest income, prudent saving, reliable stewardship. Favors patience and method over speculation; thrives in long-horizon planning and operating roles.
Wide-net commercial eye, opportunistic but shrewd. Excels in trading, brokerage, deal-making, and the social side of business; less patient than Direct Wealth.
Mother energy in its orthodox form—formal learning, certifications, steady mentorship. Seeks depth over novelty; supports the chart through structure.
Unconventional intellect, intuitive leaps, solitary study. Brings esoteric, technical, or therapeutic talent; can isolate the chart if it overpowers the Officer.
The natural outflow of one's gifts—artistic, nurturing, refined. Sustains wealth and stabilizes the chart when not wounded; channeled into cuisine, arts, teaching, and long-form craft.
Sharp intellect and unconventional creativity. Best paired with the Seal to refine its edge; unrestrained, it wounds the Officer pattern and brings turbulence.
Special & Extraordinary Patterns
Beyond the eight regular patterns, charts with extreme elemental dominance form Transformation (Hua Qi) or Following (Cong Ge) patterns — where resisting the tide spells disaster, and following the elemental surge leads to distinction.
